Pear Shape Tanzanite Earrings: The baboon growled at Jack as he tried to step closer. Nice baboon, nice baboon,” chirped Jack as he smacked his lips as though the baboon was his pet dog back home.

The baboon growled and crouched and looked prepared to pounce and attack.

“Get away, Jack!” I said as I adjusted my pear shape tanzanite earrings. “It’s obviously getting angrier!” Caught unawares, the baboon had snatched my handbag while we were waiting for the jeep to transfer us to the airport to head home. This was one of Jack and my yearly getaways to Kenya. The most valuable item in the handbag was both our passports. And the jeep driver was looking at us quite amused and also clueless to getting the baboon to return the item like a gentleman.

“We’re going to miss our flight, Kate, unless Mr. Baboon here gives us back our passports,” said Jack as he retreated to my side. “You know, this could really be funny news on CNN and BBC. American tourists stuck in Kenya because passports stolen by baboon. I can just see the headlines.” “Not funny, Jack. Not funny at all,” I fumed. "Relax," he said. "You look great with those pear shape tanzanite earrings on... (Continued below)

“Well, it’s funny that he’s not running off,” said the driver. “Usually, they would run off with their prize.”

“That’s interesting,” said Jack. “And he keeps looking at you, Kate. Maybe he’s lonely and wants a partner….ouch!”

I stomped on Jack’s foot and gave him a look that said “I’m going to kill you when we’re alone.”

The driver laughed. “He seems to be looking at your wife’s pear shape tanzanite earrings.”

“These pear shape tanzanite earrings?!” I looked at him and then back at the baboon at amazement. The drive was right, the baboon just couldn’t take his eyes off them.

Slowly, I began to remove my earrings and then held them out in front me. The baboon was like in a trance as began to approach me.

“Careful, Kate” said Jack.

I nodded. I held the earrings in front of me with my left and stretch out my right hand toward the baboon and pointed at the handbag.

I felt as though my heart was about to fail me. Would the baboon attack me? Does it understand anything that I’m doing at all?

It was too late to think about those questions. The baboon was right before me, still focused on the earrings. He dropped the handbag and going to either jump or reach out for the pear shape tanzanite earrings.

Suddenly, Jack surged forward and grabbed the handbag while I felt myself being yanked backward real forcefully, most likely by the driver.

“RUN!!!” yelled Jack as he made for the jeep.

The baboon as though snapped out of he’s trance was left empty handed and furious! I could hear his growling behind me but just kept running for the jeep with the driver in front of me.

The driver was too fast. He jumped in, started engine and got ready to move just as Jack and I threw ourselves into the vehicle. Almost like some action pack movie!

As the driver sped off, I sat up and looked behind to see the baboon still trying to follow but losing ground as the jeep went over 40miles an hour.

“Whew! Thank God I bought you those pear shaped tanzanite earrings last year! They came in pretty handy today!” laughed Jack as he tried to catch his breath.

It was really quite an adventure and memorable experience. I vowed to be twice as careful the next time I travel to place with baboons!
